Unused & derelict, this grade II* listed Gothic Revival gatehouse was on Historic England’s ‘Heritage at Risk' Register. Roofs had fallen in; floors rotted away; windows fallen out; cracks appeared in the stonework. However, it had 210 years of architectural & historical significance. Despite its condition, its fabric was retrievable & it had retained evidence of its original appearance, decoration & fixtures: from its colour scheme to the ornamental plasterwork; from its timber doors to the window handles. This meant that any repair & restoration work could be historically accurate. However, the building had no amenities - no electricity or drainage; it was cold & damp; it was noisy, adjacent a busy road. Through sensitive adaptation, we introduced a toilet & kitchen; electricity, heating & IT; thermal & acoustic insulation & accessibility to all throughout. Through considered intervention, we introduced a vestibule under the vaulted arch with glazed walls to link the spaces together & provide a new space. The Lodge retains much of its original fabric, however it is now a usable, viable & sustainable building which meets modern expectations, yet retains its historical character & its distinctive soul.
